Advice needed for selling a schwinn road bike?

Question: Advice needed for selling a schwinn road bike?

(Posted by: on 2011-09-26 16:48:06)

I would like to sell my Schwinn Continental road bike. It is a men's roadbike (although I am a 5'7 woman and it fit me fine) and a red/ orange- ish color. I bought it for $90 about two years ago, and it is in decent condition. Currently, the paint IS chipped in several areas (but small chips and no rust) and the handlebar tape is dirty/ coming off. Also, I have wheels for it but no tires. New brake pads probably need to be put on it as well. Rides fine though. My question is: How much can I realistically expect for this bike? Should I spend time replacing the handlebar tape/ brake pads/ putting new tires on it, or should I sell as is. Please help. Thanks!

Put it on Craig's list as is for $60 and see what happens.

Sell as is $45. With tires, pads and tape $55. The buyer will also have to take care of other things like cables and housings, repacking and/ or replacing the bearings, cleaning and oiling or replacing chain, adjusting and tune up the derailleurs. All that can add another $100.

Unless you replace the tires first - zero. Tires can be found at your LBS (local bicycle shop) cheap - about $12 to $14 per tire for Sunlite or Cheng Shin brands. After new tires - maybe $75 to $100. For some unknown reason, the price on these old road bikes has gone up. The more you spend fixing it up, the more you can get out of it. But if it were me - I'd just replace the tires. Take good photos from the geared side, level to the bike. No one want to see an aerial shot. See 2nd link below for what I mean. This '73 Varsity sold on craigslist for an amazing $225!!!
